The Kendale Lakes Elementary REACH  Program

REACH= Reaching Enriched Academic Curriculum & Horizons

The advanced academic program at Kendale Lakes Elementary is referred to as the REACH Department. REACH is a full time, self-contained, gifted program that services children in grades one through five.  Referrals for this program typically begin in Kindergarten at our school when incoming students display eligibility for our Kindergarten Enrichment Program (please read about this in its own link area).  A full-time, self-contained, gifted program, enables our eligible children to stay with their class all day without the need to be “pulled out” for services. This is a great program option because the children are able to stay with their advanced classroom peers and receive instruction at their accelerated level in all core subject areas.   Once our students get into 4th and 5th grade they are assigned to two separate REACH teachers that are subject area specific: one for Reading and Language Arts - Mathematics, Science and Social Studies for the other.  This rotation best serves subject area teacher experts, and most importantly, equips our students for an optimal transition to the middle school program where they report to six different teachers.

Our goal as a department is to provide the gifted child with an opportunity to think critically, express themselves creatively, and develop into an independent learner both academically and socially.  In order to accomplish this, all REACH teachers prioritize the utilization of chapter books for reading instruction and pleasure.  Journals for writing, mathematics, and science.  Use of manipulatives and various technology software programs to enrich beyond their current grade level as appropriate.  Additionally, project-based learning activities are prioritized to challenge and strengthen knowledge and creativity.  Independent assignments and group activities for presentation skills development, communication/public speaking skills, and leadership skills.  Authentic assessment products are incorporated to maximize criteria achievement and creative opportunities.  With this mission in mind, we try to expose the children to many activities where they would need to “think out of the box".  This differentiated instruction is provided not only by using chapter books, novels, hands-on science labs, and other enrichment materials, but through the use of advanced technology such as SmartBoards, LCD projectors, and various computer programs provided by the District or purchased at the school level to deliver advanced academic services to our students.

Our students continue in an advanced program after elementary school having benefited from their accelerated foundation in REACH. Many of them are accepted into prestigious magnet programs or other advanced programs the middle school levels have to offer.

If you are interested in your child participating in a full-time, gifted program, or would like to learn more about our school's REACH Department, please contact the main office at (305) 385-2575.  School and class tours available by appointment.
